Performance Evidence

The candidate must demonstrate the ability to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including evidence of the ability to:

operate a medium vehicle on at least two occasions, including:

organising work activities to comply with site standards

carrying out prestart and start-up checks on medium vehicles and ancillary equipment

operating, steering, manoeuvring and positioning vehicle and ancillary equipment

carrying out inspections and identifying faults

processing written records.

During the above, the candidate must:

locate and apply relevant legislation, documentation, policies and procedures and confirm that the work activity is compliant

implement the requirements, procedures and techniques for operating a medium vehicle

work effectively with others to operate a medium vehicle in a way that meets all required outcomes

communicate clearly and concisely with others to receive and clarify work instructions and to determine coordination requirements prior to commencing and during work activities.


Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to complete the tasks outlined in the elements, performance criteria and foundation skills of this unit, including knowledge of:

key legislation required to operate a medium vehicle

key policies, procedures and documentation required to operate a medium vehicle, including:

organisation and site requirements and procedures

medium vehicle maintenance requirements and procedures

medium vehicle refuelling procedures

loading and offloading procedures

equipment and trailer types, characteristics, uses and limitations

principles and techniques for identifying:

driving hazards and related defensive driving techniques

different transmission types

relevant hazards and emergencies

principles and techniques for operating a medium vehicle, including:

fatigue management techniques

map reading and road navigation techniques

principles and techniques for identifying and understanding:

road rules, regulations, permit and licence requirements of the relevant state/territory road traffic authority

operations and procedures for using air brakes

principles and techniques for securing loads

techniques for coordinating and communicating job activities with others.
